September 30th

The students learned how to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine. They also reviewed the most common type of sewing problems, plus ways to fix these problems.

September 29th

Students had their parts of the sewing machine quiz today. Afterwards, students had the rest of class time to work on their "Crazing stitching" or the stitching on paper.

September 28th

Students continued to learn to identify and name the parts of our sewing computers. They were given a study guide and pulled out the machines to use, as well as an activity to do at home to help them study. They will have a 12 question quiz on these parts on Wednesday. I then demonstrated how to use the sewing machines and we started practicing while stitching on paper.

September 27th

Students learned to identify and name the parts of our sewing computers. They were given a study guide and pulled out the machines to use, as well as an activity to do at home to help them study. They will have a 12 question quiz on these parts on Wednesday.

September 24th

The class learned about the differences between pressing and ironing. Pressing equipment, ironing area rules and reasons for pressing were discussed.

September 23rd

Students watched a short video clip about different types and pieces of sewing equipment. They were then given time to work on an inductive reasoning exercise to see if they could remember and figure out what different pieces of equipment are used for. This went in the class notes portion of their portfolios.

Today we finished our lesson on different pins and needles and filled out student/teacher assessment sheets for Student-led conferences.

September 21st

We finished the measuring review from Friday. Then, students learned about different kinds of sewing machine needles and pins used in sewing and for different kinds of fabrics today. They had a note taking guide they should have completed while we discussed and showed different examples.

September 20th

There was no school today due to the fire in Herriman. I hope all of you and your families are ok! We will all get through this and I can't wait to see you all when we can get back to the school. My thoughts are with you all!

September 17th

Students started a review of proper measuring, including fractions and the correct use of rulers. They worked on a review sheet to see how much they remember about measuring and to get help for anything they didn't understand. The assignment is worth 30 points and will be due on Monday.

September 15th

Students collected up supplies to start their grainline sample yesterday, so they will work on this today in class and should have enough time to finish it and turn it in. Students who don't finish it will need to take it home for homework.

September 14th

Students learned about grainlines and parts of a piece of fabric. They started a sample on grainlines in which they had to label the different parts of fabric and had to pin on a small pattern piece correctly by pinning it on with the grainline parallel to the selvage and lengthwise grain.

September 13th

Students finished learning about the three ways fabrics are produced (Woven, non-woven and knitted)and were given samples of each of the three fabrics to help them identify fabric types at the fabric store. We discussed each type and the characteristics of each.

September 10th

Students learned about what college programs are available for those interested in fashion and clothing design. They mainly focused on FIDM in California.

September 9th

Students watched a video on how fabrics are constructed (woven, non-woven, knitted) so they could see the machinery used to produce each. They also had some questions on the video to answer and should have turned them in by the end of class.

We finished discussing and showing examples of different types of fibers. We then watched a short video on how cotton is turned into fabric. We also discussed how fabrics are made (woven, non-woven, and knitted and showed examples of each. We will finish this on Thursday.

September 3rd

Students learned about fibers, the difference between natural, synthetic and blended fabrics and the properties of each. They were also shown samples of each of the different fibers.

September 2nd

Today, we completed putting portfolios/binders together and discussed where different items are located in a fabric store so students will be more knowledgeable when they go to purchase their supplies for their projects.

August 30th

Students took a preassessment on the information they will learn in this class this semester.

September 1st

Today, we had students collect their supplies provided by the school which they will use throughout the semester (Ziplock bag, 1 yard of fabric, thread and empty bobbin). They also put together a binder to keep all of their samples, notes, etc. to help them study for their state skills test at the end of the semester.
