January 30th

Today, we watched a video on how cotton fabric is produced and how fabric is made. These were two videos from previous lessons that we haven't had time to watch. Nothing was due today or had to be turned in.

January 29th

Students learned about the three ways fabrics are produced (Woven, non-woven and knitted)and were given samples of each of the three fabrics to help them identify fabric types at the fabric store. We discussed each type and the characteristics of each.

January 28th

Students learned about fibers, the difference between natural, synthetic and blended fabrics and the properties of each. They were also shown samples of each of the different fibers.

January 27th

Students discussed and looked at different types of thread and the purposes of each. They should now be more knowledgeable when choosing the types of thread they would like to use for their projects.

January 26th

Students took a short pre-test on different sewing terms and skills. We also talked about various places, with advantages and disadvantages, to find supplies for their projects.

January 23rd

Students were shown each of the sewing projects we will work on throughout the semester and were given a letter for their parents/guardians which contains a list of the needed supplies for all of their projects. They also put together a binder to keep all of their samples, notes, etc. to help them study for their state skills test at the end of the semester. Students also picked up their supplies (Ziplock bag, scrap fabric, thread and empty bobbin) to use for their samples. They were also provided a tote tray to keep all of their supplies in and a place to store them in the classroom.

January 22nd

Students reviewed the class disclosure and policies, as well as the content of the course. They have a $5.00 lab fee, payable to the office, due on Thursday, February 5th for 50 points. Any student on a fee waiver needs to talk to me sometime before this deadline.

January 21st

Students were welcomed to class and we discussed what Clothing Construction 1 is and some of the activities they will do doing throughout the semester. RATTLE traits and emergency procedures were also reviewed. Students were given a survey of what previous sewing skills they have learned. They spent the rest of the class time getting to know the other students in their class.

January 16th

Students were given their final grades and citizenship. They checked for any mistakes which may have been made by me or the computer. They also watched a video on careers in the clothing industry.

January 15th

Students cleaned out their binders, cabinets, tote trays, etc. in class. We then watched a video on how clothing, in this case jeans, are manufactured and the types of machinery they use.

January 14th

The students learned tips to use when shopping to find quality clothing and ways to be smarter clothing consumers. State skills test results and certificates will be handed out tomorrow (Thursday) at the start of class.

January 13th

Students took the Clothing 1 State skills test in the computer lab, which is the final for the class. They were given the whole class period, plus more time in TA if needed to take this. The tests will be sent to the State office of education for scoring and results should be returned by Thursday or Friday. This is worth 100 points on their grade.

January 12th

Students were able to chose between three different activities to help them study for the State Skills Test. They could spend the time working on their study guide, do a sewing terms crossword puzzle or a matching activity called "terminology treadles."

January 9th

Students went to the computer lab today to work on a practice test to help them study for the Clothing state skills test which students will take on Tuesday. The practice test is found at: lemonkitchen.dud.utips.org and click on the Clothing 1 State Test review. Their skills test is scheduled for Tuesday. Today was also the last day to turn in any late/missing assignments and extra credit, including unused late and hall passes. They have been reminded about this deadline every day this week.

January 8th

The students played a jeopardy game to review for their state skills test next Tuesday. The last day to turn in late work and extra credit is tomorrow, Friday, January 9th.

January 7th

Students were given today to work on their study guides for their final (State skills test). They were also provided with a matching game to review pattern symbols and a 20 questions game to review the course material. The state skills test will be given on January 13th and is worth 100 points on their grade. If a student is going to be absent this day, they must arrange with me to take it on the Friday before. Once the students take it on Tuesday, the tests will be submitted for scoring and cannot be accessed again after this day.

January 6th

Students were given study guides for their final (State skills test) to work on during this next week. The state skills test will be given on January 13th and is worth 100 points on their grade. If a student is going to be absent this day, they must arrange with me to take it on the Friday before. January 5th

Students learned about international clothing care symbols and used the symbols to create clothing labels as well as translate care labels from other countries.
