October 30th

There was no class today due to the Earth Sciences field trip. The couple that I did have helped me but the diaper bags together for the electronic baby simulation next term.

October 29th

We discussed and demonstrated different pieces of marking equipment on fabric. They received the notes to put in their binders to use to study for the state skills test at the end of the semester. The students were then given time to try out and use the pieces of marking equipment. We also checked grades and citizenship for this 1st term, since most of the students will be gone tomorrow for the ninth grade Earth Sciences field trip. The students were also reminded that their pillow fabric and stuffing is due on Monday!

October 28th

Students learned about the importance of pattern instructions and layouts provided by the manufacturer. They also practiced on a sample laying out pattern pieces on fabric (in this case it was construction paper) and turned it in for 50 points. This will be the first assignment due on their second term grade.

October 27th

Students learned to identify the most common symbols used on patterns. They did this by discussing the symbols and matching the symbol to the meaning on a sheet and then they played the game "Concentration" with a partner to identify and recognize these common symbols.

Friday, October 24, 2008

October 24th

Students watched a video on laying out patterns and pattern symbols. They also completed a set of questions from the video and reviewed the symbols shown on the video. They were given time at the end of class and after school to finish any missing assignments, which are all due to me today. Extra credit was all due during class time today. They have been reminded daily of this due date for two weeks, so no exceptions will be given.

October 23rd

Students were given the rest of class today to finish their hand-stitches. These were due at the end of class today. Today was also the last day in class to work on any missing assignments from the past couple of weeks.

October 22nd

Students were given the whole class period to work on the hand-stitches they learned about yesterday. These will be due at the end of class tomorrow (Thursday).

October 21st

Students were reminded about the deadline Friday, October 21st for any late/missing assignments and extra credit. This is all due into the basket by the end of class on that day. There will be open labs after school each day this week so students can come in and use the equipment to finish any missing assignments. Students then learned about different kinds and sizes of hand needles. They also learned about different hand stitches, which they will start working on tomorrow. Students had enough time to cut their pieces of fabric for the samples.

October 15th

Today was the last day students were given in class to work on their fleece hats. Most students finished and moved on to creating fleece scarves or extra hats for extra credit. Students who did not finish were those who were not prepared with their fabric and missed class time to work on their projects. The lab will be open after school from 2:30 to 3:00 Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week for students to catch-up. Pillow fabric and stuffing is due on November 3rd.

October 10th

Students continued to work on their fleece hats.

October 9th

Today we started a fleece hats. Students had a variety of hats to choose from: ski hat, infant beanie, multi-colored beanie, etc. Each student measured their own head to make sure the hat they will make fits them correctly. By combining all of the techniques we've learned so far, students should be able to make a very nice looking winter hat!

October 8th

Students finished their three serging samples and were taught how to sew, clip and iron inward and outward seams. This last sample will be due tomorrow (Thursday). We will also be starting our fleece hats tomorrow.

October 7th

Some students were finishing up their serge samples. Those three were due. We also started or continued working on our four seam finish samples: zigzag, pinked and stitched, clean finish, and serge. Seam finishes are due tomorrow.

October 6th

We continued to work on our serge samples. Serge samples were to practice serging straight lines, corners, and one curve. All three serge samples were due at the end of class today. Some students were able to start on their four seam finish samples which will be due tomorrow.

October 3rd

Students were taught and walked through the process of using four of the most common seam finishes to prevent fraying of the fabric edges on their projects. Students started work on a sample demonstrating clean-finished, serged, stitched and pinked and zig-zagged finishes. They will finish this sample on Monday of next week.

Today we started our serge samples. Students are making three serge samples: one square, one in the shape of Utah (to practice serging a corner), and one curve.
