April 30th

Students learned how to make blind hems using their sewing machine and their blind hem foot. They started a sample today and it will be due tomorrow (Thursday) at the end of class.

April 29th

Students learned how to read and use the information contained on the front and back of a pattern envelope. This was done as a class, so the students kept the information they learned in their binder.

April 28th

Students partnered up with a friend to take their measurements and find out their sizes in preparation for making their pajama bottoms. They used the textbooks and a packet describing the correct way to take body measurements to do this.

April 25th

Today was the last day students had in class to work on their tie/purse projects. If they did not finish, there will be an open lab on Tuesday and Thursday after school next week.

April 24th

Students continued to work on their purse/tie projects. A few students have already turned in their projects and more will be turning them in today. Students will have one more day (Friday) to work on this project, then they will have to come after school on Tuesday or Thursday of next week to finish in the lab on our equipment. Students are not allowed to take these home to finish since all projects need to be completed in the lab. Also, students were given the due date for their pajama pant fabric and elastic. These are due on May 3rd and the fabric needs to be prewashed and ironed in order to start their project.

Students continued to work on their tie/purse project. These will be due on Friday. If they do not finish, they will have to come after school to use the equipment. They cannot work on these at home. They must be completed at the school in the lab.

April 18th

Students continued working on their purse and tie projects today during class. Most were cutting out their pieces out of fabric and interfacing today.

April 17th

Students started on their purse and tie project. Most students worked on pinning on their patterns and cutting out their fabric today. They will be working on these most of next week.

April 16th

Students continued learning about and working on their button and buttonhole samples. They watched a demonstration of both and then worked on their own samples. These were be due at the end of class. Students will be starting on their purse/tie projects tomorrow as well.

April 15th

Students finished putting their material and interfacing together for their sample. They were then shown how to make buttonholes using the sewing machines. The students then had the rest of class time to work on this sample. This will be due tomorrow at the end of class.

April 14th

Students learned about the importance and functions of buttons using a powerpoint and visuals. They also prepared their fabric and interfacing for their sample tomorrow on creating buttonholes and sewing on buttons using the sewing machine.

April 11th

Students were given the entire class time to work on and finish the patch pocket samples. After they finished, they were given the rest of class time to read about common sewing machine and serger malfunctions.

April 10th

Students started working on their patch-pocket sample. They learned how to miter corners and reinforce the tops of pockets to take more stress. Students will finish these tomorrow and should turn them in by the end of class.

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

April 9th

Students continued to work on their facing samples today. We worked on sewing the sample together, clipping the inward curve, and understitching. Students will be given part of class tomorrow to finish these before we move on to patch pockets. Also, Interfacing and fabric for their tie/purse project is due April 15th for 25 points.

April 8th

Students had a sub today. They watched "Cypher in the Snow" and wrote about someone they know who has been left out and forgotten. They also had to share something about themselves that no own else knows.

April 7th

Students learned about how to apply and use fusible interfacings and creating facings on shirts by creating a facing sample. This will take two days of class time and will be due tomorrow (Tuesday) at the end of class. Students will also learn about trimming layers and understitching tomorrow.

April 4th

We discussed the purposes behind Interfacing and saw examples of different types of interfacing and learned what each type is used for. Students are now able to go to the fabric store with more knowledge and tips about choosing interfacing for their tie/purse product. Fabric and Interfacing for their purse or tie is due April 15th.

April 3rd

Students were given an assignment to read pages 481-497 out of the book (one of only two book assignments given this semester) and to answer questions 1-17 on page 498. Students who worked on it during class were able to finish. Those who talked during class didn't finish and had to check out a book to finish this at home. This was an introduction to patterns, preparing fabric for patterns and cutting and using patterns and pattern symbols to make projects. Students were also told that their fabric and interfacing for the tie/purse project is due on April 15th.

April 2nd

Students learned about the importance of pattern instructions and layouts provided by the manufacturer. They also practiced on a sample laying out pattern pieces on fabric (in this case it was construction paper) and turned it in for 50 points.

April 1st

Students learned to identify the most common symbols used on patterns. They did this by discussing the symbols and then played the game "Concentration" with a partner to identify and recognize these common symbols.
